Short Description
Built with R Shiny, this dashboard transforms 337,970 records from the Pan American Health Organization into an interactive epidemiological platform covering 299 health indicators across 49 countries in the Americas. It enables multi-country trend comparison, country-level health profiles, disease burden analysis, and health system benchmarking through six thematic tabs and a live choropleth map.
Feature Cards
Tab 1 — Overview
6 KPI cards covering Life Expectancy, Infant Mortality, Maternal Mortality, NCD burden, Tuberculosis, and Doctors per capita. Interactive Americas choropleth map with year and indicator selectors. Top 5 / Bottom 5 country ranking chart.
Tab 2 — Trend Explorer
Multi-country time-series for any of 299 indicators. Sex-disaggregated trend toggle. Country comparison bar chart for the most recent available year. Searchable data table with latest values per country.
Tab 3 — Country Profile
Individual health profile for any of 49 countries with 6 KPI boxes and four mini trend charts covering Life Expectancy, Maternal & Infant health, Disease Burden, and Health System capacity.
Tab 4 — Disease Burden
Communicable vs NCD mortality grouped bar chart. Disease-specific trend lines for Dengue, Malaria, Cholera, Measles, and Tuberculosis. HIV/AIDS new diagnoses rate trends.
Tab 5 — Maternal & Child
Under-5, Infant, and Neonatal mortality trends. Maternal mortality ratio. DTP3, BCG, and Polio immunization coverage. Births attended by skilled personnel and antenatal care coverage.
Tab 6 — Health System
Medical doctors density per 10,000 population. Public health expenditure vs out-of-pocket spending. Hospital beds ratio by country. GDP per capita (PPP) vs Life Expectancy scatter plot.

About This Project
The Americas Health Core Indicators Dashboard was built to make PAHO's Core Indicators dataset — one of the most comprehensive public health open data sources in the Western Hemisphere — accessible to researchers, policymakers, and public health professionals without requiring technical expertise.
The raw data arrives as a 155MB CSV spanning hundreds of indicators, multiple decades, and inconsistent encoding conventions. A reproducible R data pipeline cleans, validates, and caches the dataset on startup. A five-pillar QA audit identified and resolved one data defect: 722 records with negative coverage values caused by PAHO source encoding were treated as missing data and removed from all visualizations.
